Mini Rebuild
Step 26 - Spot Welding
Monday, February 23, 2009:
Tonight I purchased this inexpensive 110 volt spot welder. Let's try it out...
I couldn't give this old Mini hood away so rather than scrap it, I held on to it for test welding. Ten seconds with my angle grinder and I have my test pieces.
And ten seconds later, I have them spot welded together very solidly. I'm impressed.
A previous owner replaced both front fenders but I noticed recently that some of the spot welds had seperated. Fixing this particular problem is one of the reasons I purchased the spot welder.
Sand off any primer from the front and back side. Clamp the pieces together. Place the spot welder tongs on the two pieces of metal. Squeeze down hard while activating the welder for ~3 seconds. Deactivate but continue to squeeze the tongs for another 10 seconds or so, then release. Result? The parts are now welded together. Well worth the price of the tool. I have a whole job planned for this little guy. More on that soon.
